‘Sea Inspired’ and ‘Long Island Sound’

Remember The Trends for the Summer of 2013? Today, as I have promised, I would like to take a further look into the two styles that are almost always in fashion in the summertime: the ‘Sea Inspired’ and its ‘Long Island’ variation.

Let’s start from the fact check. Did your vacations ended too soon and you are already ready for the next year’s one? And does this beautiful beach house with a breath taking ocean view meet your concept of perfect holiday destination? Are you trying to save all the good energy and memories the summer time brought you, in vain? If so, why won’t you try to preserve it by decorating your living space accordingly to keep those memories alive until the summer comes back again?

You can take it quite literally, especially if you are the lucky owner of a beach house you want to furnish, but with a little bit of imagination and creativity, you can have it in your Midtown apartment, too!

In this case all the materials characteristic to the interior style in question – rope, wicker, driftwood sea glass, are easy to gain, and all the accessories and décor like seashells, corals, motives with anchors, sea horses, starfishes, oars, boats, portholes-like-mirrors and lamps, etc., are in a place and don’t need any explanation. And of course, the view helps a lot.

If you are thinking of a sea-inspired retreat in your apartment in the city, you can either take this idea literally, or, which I personally advice, try to transform it a bit to interpret it by your own aesthetic taste, temperament and style in which you want to furnish the entire space.

The ‘Sea Inspired’ style above is just an overall impression – using similar pallets of colors, like the orthodox one with some hints of red (from corals); and raw materials, like rattan, rope, and wood – which is classic, but just a little bit modified.

If you want to accomplish this overall impression, you need to consider just few main rules:

1. The pallet of colors is the one you will see when squinting your eyes on a sea shore: all shades of blue and turquoise (teal, robin’s egg blue, aqua, sky blue, emerald green, sea foam green, ocean blue), white, beige, green, brown. Colors of nature, so called;

2. The impression of the spaciousness you can feel on a beach: vast spaces of a sky meeting sea, sandy beaches, the tides’ repetitiveness;

3. Textures and materials: withered driftwood, ropes, rattan, wicker, seashells, corals, etc. As always, it could be used literally – e.g., the compositions of driftwood you found can be used as the element of your home decorations, or you can use it as a material for mirrors, lamps, or furniture.

4. The idea of recycling by using sea glass; Do you want it literally? Just put the sea glass pieces you found on a beach into some beautiful vase – the decorative effect would be gorgeous. If you want to transform it a bit, find some lamps, vases, and art made of a sea glass.

Being an enthusiast of recycling you can also use furniture made out of the used shipping pallets, which is quite trendy nowadays:

These are only a few ideas I wanted to share with you today; and what you choose, how you combine it together, is up to you. Your imagination and creativity are the only limit here. Oh, money can be a factor also, but, as you can see, you really can do it on a budget – think of all the recycling, and the true gifts from the sea…
